Bernard "Bernie" Sanders (born September 8, 1941) is an American politician who has been the United States Senator for Vermont since 2017. He ran for the democratic nomination for president in the 2016 election before dropping out and endorsing Hillary Clinton, his democratic rival. Hillary, however, lost the election to Donald Trump in surprising defeat.
